The petition was filed to prevent the ending of Shin Bet head Ronen Bar’s term of office on 15 June 2025 without the appointment of a replacement by due process. The respondents are the attorney general, the head of Shin Bet, the prime minister, and the Government of Israel.
The urgent timetable set by the court indicates its understanding of the seriousness of the situation and the need to reach a quick decision, especially in light of the imminent end of the Shin Bet head’s term of office, in just three days.
The Movement for Quality Government in Israel claims that leaving the position of head of the Shin Bet unfilled during a war and while conducting sensitive security investigations against elements in the Prime Minister’s Office is extremely unreasonable and harms national security.
