Tomorrow, 12 December 2024 at 15:30, the Supreme Court will hear the application for a contempt of court ruling brought by the Movement for Quality Government in Israel against Minister of Justice Yariv Levin. According to the Movement, the minister is violating the ruling given last September, which ordered him to convene the judicial appointments committee with the purpose of appointing a permanent president to the Supreme Court.
The hearing will take place on the same day that minister Levin convened another meeting of the judicial appointments committee, but the agenda did not include a vote on the appointment of a permanent president, as required by the ruling.
At the request of journalists, the hearing will be broadcast live
Adv. Dr. Eliad Shraga, chairman of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel “We are witnessing unprecedented conduct by the minister of justice, who knowingly and deliberately chooses to violate an express judgment of the Supreme Court. This is a serious violation of the rule of law and the principle of separation of powers. A country where a governmental authority takes the law into its own hands – choosing whether or not to uphold judicial orders issued against it – is a country in which the seeds of calamity and anarchy are sown. We cannot put up with this situation, and we will demand that what is stipulated in the law be applied to him.”
