Tomorrow, Thursday 25 June at 9:00, a hearing will be held at the supreme court in Jerusalem on the petition of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel against the granting of firearms licenses by the Ministry of National Security.

To recall, the Movement for Quality Government in Israel petitioned the supreme court to order the cancellation of the firearms licenses issued unlawfully by employees of the Ministry of National Security and the Knesset, and to order the attorney general to begin a criminal investigation against minister of national security Itamar Ben Gvir and Knesset speaker Amir Ohana.

The Movement for Quality Government in Israel claimed in its petition that the granting of firearms licenses by people in positions of trust in the Ministry of National Security, by people on national service, and by employees of the Knesset was done without authority, and is therefore void and the licenses granted are illegal. Following this, the Movement claims that Ben Gvir and Ohana’s instructions to their employees amount to a reasonable suspicion of committing criminal offenses, which requires the opening of a criminal investigation, or at the very least a preliminary examination procedure.

Last week, the state notified that the police had opened an investigation into the granting of firearms licenses, and as a result, the hearing will focus on the question of canceling the licenses that were distributed without authority.

Rotem Bavli Dvir, head of the administrative litigation department at the Movement for Quality Government in Israel: “We welcome the decision to open a criminal investigation, but we cannot ignore the fact that apparently weapons are now circulating, in the hands of those who should not have received them in the first place. That’s why it’s important for the state to address this matter as well, to prevent injury to human life.’
