Today, the Supreme Court held a hearing on the petition of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel demanding the recall of weapons licenses distributed by employees of the Ministry of National Security without authority.
During the hearing, a confidential discussion was held before the representatives of the state only, after which supreme court deputy president Justice Yitzhak Amit announced that the court had received information that the number of firearms licenses that were distributed without authority is much greater than the number known to the court until now. According to Justice Amit’s announcement, the court will require the state to publish a summary of the police investigation on the matter, and also asked the state to consider suspending some of the licenses that were distributed without authority.
Adv. Rotem Bavli Dvir, head of litigation at the Movement for Quality Government in Israel: “The court’s statements today at the end of the confidential hearing, that many more weapons were distributed without authority than was presented in the previous hearing, are exactly what we feared, and what we have warned about for over ten months since we filed the petition: there is a serious danger to public security as a result of unauthorized workers involved in the distribution of firearms, and the state must provide an answer as to what it intends to do with them. At the very least, those licenses should be suspended immediately, and we hope that he is what happens. these are important achievements of the petition, and we will not rest until we know that firearms are not circulating in the wrong hands.”
