Col. (Res.) Eran Duvdevani – Founder of the “Paratroopers for Democracy” Association spoke at the demonstration in support of the justice system and the call for equality of burden and the establishment of a state investigation committee held this evening (6.6.2026) by the Movement for Quality of Government and the Forum of Protest Organizations in Habima Square in Tel Aviv:
“I want to talk about an unpopular issue in Israel of the current period – values
I do not claim to represent all the paratroopers of their generations, but I want to talk about the values that the paratroopers instilled in the IDF, and from them – about the values of a democratic, liberal, life-loving state.
When Moshe Dayan, the Chief of Staff, and Ariel Sharon, decided to integrate Unit 101 into the 890th Paratrooper Battalion, they wanted the values established in the unit to permeate all IDF units through the paratroopers. Indeed, the paratroopers implemented and instilled in the entire IDF the values of leadership, “not returning until we finish”, “leaving no one behind”, bravery, courage, integrity, which is expressed in the willingness to think critically and independently without fear and to bear responsibility for the decisions made.
Since the establishment of the ultra-extremist nightmare government at the end of 2022, especially during the coup d’état in 2023 and even more so – since the Netanyahu massacre on October 7, 2023, these values have been perceived as ridiculous by those in whose eyes the important and considered values are power, money, honor, jobs, corruption, trampling on the rule of law and outright predation.
I want to focus on one value from the list of values I mentioned above, values that, as mentioned – are perceived as “Kaplanist”, leftist and, mercifully, treacherous. And the value is “bearing responsibility”. When the rescue attempt of Nachshon Waxman failed in October 1994, and Captain Nir Porez of the General Staff Patrol also fell in the battle, it was clear to everyone that this was a tactical, and even micro-tactical, failure. Nevertheless, that same evening, Yitzhak Rabin, the Prime Minister, declared that he bore responsibility for this failure, as the one who made the decision. Where is he and where is the one who claims to be the Israeli Churchill?
The government of destruction is running away from any shred of responsibility: not for its part in the disintegration and division of the people, not for its part in financing Hamas, not for ignoring the warnings that were issued about the strengthening of Hamas, not for cultivating the strategy of “Hamas is an asset, the PA is a burden,” not for abandoning the hostages until it was forced to do so by the US president, at the painful price of over 40 hostages who were murdered and died in captivity, not for refusing to discuss the day after the war, a refusal that left Hamas in power in Gaza. (After all, he is an asset, isn’t he?), in nurturing agents of an enemy state in the Prime Minister’s office, crushing the education and legal systems, abandoning citizens on the northern border and ignoring their needs (after all, they bore His Majesty), not for our ever-worst international situation, for the status of a leper state considered a violent state that ignores international law, and not for the terrible responsibility that rests on its shoulders for pressuring President Trump to withdraw from Obama’s nuclear agreement, an agreement that was dozens of times better than what is currently brewing between the US and Iran. Zero taking of responsibility, blaming the entire world and its wife, and especially – blaming us, the caring citizens of Israel, who bear the burden of security and the economy, for the government’s failures.
Taking responsibility is the willingness to establish a state commission of inquiry – this is the only mechanism established by law, the only one that can reach the truth and the only one that has broad public support. Anyone who knowingly and maliciously refrains from establishing such an investigative committee knows that they have something to hide – all the same things I mentioned above. And along the way – to charge the poison machine with discrediting the Supreme Court, so that part of the public will lose trust in it, and thus cast doubt on this important mechanism. Because this is the method – first to slander and then to claim that there is no trust in it.
