Chair of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel: “It must be carefully considered whether the proposed appointment guarantees the independence of the police and the public’s trust in it”

The Movement for Quality Government in Israel today appealed to the Advisory Committee on Senior Civil Service Appointments, requesting that the proposed appointment of Superintendent Daniel (Danny) Levy to the position of Inspector General of the Israel Police be thoroughly examined. In a detailed appeal, the Movement raises a number of questions and points for examination regarding the suitability of Superintendent Levy for the sensitive and important position.

The Movement emphasizes the great importance of ensuring the independence and independence of the police commissioner, especially in light of the recent changes in the relationship between the police and the political echelon, as reflected in amendment No. 37 to the Police Ordinance.

In its appeal, the Movement for Quality Government in Israel raises several points for consideration:

1. The degree of affinity between Superintendent Levy and the minister of national security: the Movement wishes to examine the nature of the relationship between the two and their possible influence on the independence of the police.
2. The conduct of the Coastal District under the command of Superintendent Levy: the Movement presents a number of judicial decisions that raise questions about the handling of demonstrations and the right to protest in the district.
3. The professional experience of Superintendent Levy: the Movement wishes to examine whether his command experience is sufficient for the position of commissioner, compared to other potential candidates.
4. The results of the activity of the Coast District: the Movement raises questions about the increase in the number of cases of violence in the district under the command of Superintendent Levy.

The Movement for Quality Government in Israel emphasizes that the purpose of its appeal is to ensure that the appointment of the next commissioner will be made with a thorough consideration of all relevant aspects, with the aim of maintaining the independence of the police and the public’s trust in it.

Chair of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel, Adv. Dr. Eliad Shraga: “The position of the police commissioner is of utmost importance to the law enforcement system and to Israeli democracy. We call on the Advisory Committee on Senior Civil Service Appointments to carefully examine all aspects of the proposed appointment, and to make sure that the candidate who is selected will be able to ensure the professional independence of the police and the public’s trust in it. This is a heavy responsibility, and we are confident that the committee will consider the matter seriously and act in the public interest.”
