Today, 2 January 2025 at 11:00, the ruling will be given by an expanded panel of nine judges on the petition against the law that gives the minister extensive powers over the police

The panel of nine judges of the Supreme Court, sitting as the High Court of Justice, led by President of the Supreme Court Justice Uzi Fogelman, will announce today at 11:00 a.m. the ruling on the petition of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel against the amendment to the Police Ordinance (“the Ben Gvir Law”).

The petition, submitted by the Movement in December 2022, attacks the amendment that gives the minister of national security extensive powers over the police, including powers to formulate policy regarding investigations. According to the Movement, the amendment harms the independence of the police, allows for the politicization of law enforcement, and is a fatal violation of basic democratic principles.

Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara stated in her response to the petition that the amendment is unconstitutional and that it should be repealed, stressing that it “creates an unbalanced regime structure that allows for the politicization of the exercise of police power.”
